Pre-natal Visits:
The doula will meet with you and your partner at least once before you go into labor to become acquainted, to explore and discuss your priorities and any fears or concerns, and to plan how you might best work together. The doula will explore with you your own best ways of coping with pain and fatigue of labor and how you and your partner foresee working together. The doula can assist you with writing a birth plan. You and your doula might decide on other meetings and will probably want to remain in touch by telephone. The doula will inform you of times when she is unavailable for labor support. To cover those times, she will arrange for a back-up doula whom you may also meet if you would like.
When you are in labor:
It is preferable that you call your doula when you think you might be in labor, even if you do not need her yet. She can answer questions and make suggestions over the phone. She will usually need approximately one hour to get to you from the time you ask her to come. She will provide continuous physical and emotional support throughout labor, beginning either at home or at the hospital/birthing center. Except for extraordinary circumstances, she or her back-up will remain with you throughout your labor and birth.
After the birth:
Your doula will remain with you for a short time after your birth until you are comfortable and your family is ready for quiet time together. She can provide immediate postpartum support, including assistance with breastfeeding and basic newborn care. Your doula will make another contact with you after the birth to discuss the birth, admire your baby, and address any concerns you may have as a new mother. She can provide you with continued assistance with breastfeeding, newborn, and postpartum care. She can also provide you with referrals to appropriate postpartum and new family resources.

Personal notes: I am the mother of 4 children. I have personally experienced hospital birth, homebirth, cesarean birth, and Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC). I am an Assistant Midwife, Certified Lactation Counselor, Certified Childbirth Educator, and Doula. My 14 years of experience working with mothers and babies has involved a wide variety of circumstances including VBAC, twins, adoption, single mothers, critically ill infants, and pregnancy loss.
My mission is to inform, support, and serve all members of the family as they welcome a new child and reach for their fullest potential at this special time. I strive to blend tradition and intuition with science and practical experience. You will receive care, respect, and reassurance as you make your transitions and learn new skills or refresh old ones.
