Services: A doula, as an invited guest at the birth of a child, recognizes childbirth as a momentous life event. She understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labour. She stays by the side of the labouring woman continuously throughout childbirth, providing physical comfort measures and assisting partners to participate at their own comfort level. A doula does not take the place of the father/partner, rather she can provide the guidance, support, and reassurance needed to help the partner feel more relaxed. She is a professional who can facilitate communication between the labouring woman, her partner, and the medical team. She strives to help the family achieve the birth they desire,with or without medical interventions. Doulas can aide at births attended by midwives or doctors and in hospital or your own home. If you choose breastfeeding, counselling is available to help with any concerns that arise with breastfeeding and will provide techniques to help make breastfeeding positive, enjoyable, and successful.

Qualifications: Dona certified training through Douglas College. Some of our doulas are certified breastfeeding counselors.

Personal notes: Services from Island Doulas are negotiated between the individual doula and the client and are dependent upon the services desired and, is some cases, on the financial situation of the mother. A doula may consider a trade for product or services in lieu of traditional payment.
